US Steelworkers Clinch Four-Year Wage Deal With Oil Refiners

The United Steelworkers (USW) union reached a tentative four-year national agreement with a coalition of U.S. refiners led by Marathon Petroleum on Friday, potentially averting labor disruptions across the sector. The deal, which covers approximately 30,000 workers, establishes a "pattern" for wage increases and benefits that will now move to local chapters for final ratification.

The settlement follows a week of high-stakes negotiations that saw both parties agree to rolling 24-hour contract extensions to avoid a strike. While specific financial terms were not immediately disclosed, the United Steelworkers characterized the settlement as providing "strong wage increases" alongside adjustments to health-care cost-sharing.

A Dual-Track Negotiation

The refining industry employs a unique bargaining structure where national standards are established first, followed by local-level talks. According to Marathon spokesman Jamal Kheiry, the company is satisfied with the "pattern agreement" and expects local sites to begin the ratification process immediately.

The deal encompasses several critical pillars:

  • Substantial wage growth over the four-year agreement.
    • Maintained standards for health-care benefit sharing.
    • A framework for addressing site-specific operational issues.
This agreement covers approximately 30,000 workers across the United States. By securing a national framework, the industry avoids the immediate threat of widespread labor action that could have disrupted fuel production at a time of heightened energy market sensitivity.
