MDA Space Secures C$474 Million Deal for Arctic Defense Satellites

The order forms a critical component of the Enhanced Satellite Communications Project-Polar, a C$2.7 billion federal initiative designed to provide the Canadian Armed Forces with reliable, high-speed connectivity in the High North. By integrating these 27 units, Telesat will grow its low Earth orbit network to 225 satellites, with the new hardware featuring 500 megahertz of military Ka-band spectrum connectivity. MDA will handle the manufacturing at its Montreal facility, utilizing SpaceX Falcon 9 rockets for deployment.

This infrastructure expansion mirrors a broader trend among NATO allies to prioritize space-based assets for regional sovereignty and emergency response in territories where traditional ground communications often fail. MDA Chief Executive Mike Greenley emphasized that secure, real-time data is vital for maintaining situational awareness and coordinating joint operations in the North.
