The July 21 meeting between Nord’s technical team and ministry officials marked a critical shift in the company’s development strategy. Rather than a preliminary inquiry, the session provided specific mandates for the recovery project, including requirements for a site-specific Environmental Compliance Approval for sewage works and a Permit to Take Water. The ministry confirmed the consultation framework in writing the following day, establishing a defined schedule for project deliverables.
To manage this regulatory pathway, Nord has deployed a specialized team led by accountable coordinator Alex Kuhnert. Four distinct workstreams—encompassing project descriptions, site mapping, baseline environmental data, and geochemical recommendations—are currently underway. This operational shift leverages Ontario Regulation 463/24, a framework designed to streamline the recovery of metals from legacy tailings. The regulation provides an 80-day review pathway for complete applications, a process recently validated by the successful permitting of the Hollinger Tailings Project in Timmins earlier this year.
