Google Maps evolves into an AI agent for bookings and logistics

Google is transforming its navigation app into a proactive digital assistant, granting users the ability to order food, secure hotel rooms, and purchase event tickets directly through Ask Maps. This shift moves the platform beyond simple routing, positioning it as a tool for executing complex, real-world logistical tasks.

The updated service integrates directly with third-party platforms like Square, Toast, and Uber Eats, allowing users to build digital carts and finalize transactions without leaving the interface. When searching for accommodations, the AI now parses nuanced requests—such as finding a hotel with an 'artsy vibe' near specific amenities—to compare pricing and availability before directing users to booking partners.

Personal Intelligence serves as the backbone of this update, syncing with a user’s Gmail and calendar to provide context-aware answers regarding flight times or reservation details. While this feature remains disabled by default, it enables the assistant to retain memory of previous planning sessions. Supplementing these agentic capabilities, a new live transit widget provides real-time updates on delays and local conditions. These features are currently rolling out, with the core booking tools initially limited to users within the United States.
