Sun Life Names Joseph Natale as Incoming Board Chair

Joseph Natale is set to succeed Scott Powers as chair of Sun Life Financial’s Board of Directors following the company’s annual general meeting on May 5, 2027. Powers will retire from the board upon completing his full term, marking a planned leadership transition for the Toronto-based insurance and asset management firm.

Sun Life Names Joseph Natale as Incoming Board Chair

Natale, a Sun Life director since 2023, currently leads the company’s Management Resource Committee and serves on its Risk Committee. His background includes executive roles at major Canadian corporations, most notably as former president and CEO of both Rogers Communications and TELUS. His career also spans global consulting, including a tenure as a managing partner at KPMG Consulting. Beyond his work with Sun Life, Natale acts as the lead independent director at Shopify and as a senior advisor for the private equity firm Altas Partners.

Powers expressed confidence in his successor’s ability to guide the company’s focus on financial security and digital transformation. Under the current board’s oversight, Sun Life has grown to manage $1.70 trillion in assets as of June 2026. Natale stated he intends to work closely with CEO Kevin Strain to maintain the firm’s diversified strategy and commitment to shareholders. The transition process is expected to remain collaborative, with Powers stepping down officially after the spring 2027 meeting.
