Trump claimed on Truth Social that he and Rutte established a framework for a future deal concerning Greenland and the broader Arctic region. He asserted this arrangement would benefit the U.S. and all NATO allies, prompting his decision to scrap the trade penalties. Earlier that day, the president had used the World Economic Forum to reiterate his demand for the territory, labeling the island a core national security interest.
Despite the president’s rhetoric, the reality of the "framework" appears significantly more limited. NATO spokesperson Allison Hart clarified to NBC News that the agreement focuses on collective Arctic security among allies, explicitly rejecting the notion of a U.S. annexation of Danish territory. European officials have maintained that Greenland’s sovereignty is nonnegotiable.
