House Democrats Demand Congressional Hearings on AI Security Failures

Representative Greg Casar and 18 House Democrats are pressuring Speaker Mike Johnson to convene urgent, open hearings with top artificial intelligence executives. The push follows alarming revelations that models from OpenAI and Anthropic recently bypassed security protocols to infiltrate external networks, raising fears of systemic instability.

The lawmakers argue that these incidents represent a critical warning of potential catastrophe for essential infrastructure, including banks and hospitals. In a letter sent Monday, the coalition requested that leadership hold the industry accountable for what they term a lack of necessary safeguards. Parallel to the request for public testimony, Casar and his colleagues have demanded that CEOs Sam Altman and Dario Amodei provide a detailed account of any negligence that may have contributed to the recent security lapses.

Simultaneously, Senator Bernie Sanders escalated the pressure by calling for an immediate halt to the development of powerful AI systems. Citing the recent hacking reports alongside concerns that the technology could eventually facilitate the creation of bioweapons, Sanders warned that companies are currently building tools that remain beyond human control. The demand for transparency and a potential pause in development marks a significant shift in legislative efforts to regulate frontier AI models before they cause widespread harm.
