Sergey Brin spends $100 million to block California billionaire tax

Proposition 40 would levy a one-time 5% tax on the net worth of roughly 200 California-based billionaires, a move intended to bolster the state’s healthcare programs. This funding is critical as the state faces a potential $30 billion shortfall in federal Medicaid support following expected budget cuts. Brin’s contribution to the opposition campaign is part of a broader push to pass counter-measures that would effectively nullify the tax by restricting the state's ability to introduce new levies.

Brin is not the only tech leader distancing himself from the state’s fiscal policy. High-profile departures—including Mark Zuckerberg’s move to Florida and the relocation of figures like Peter Thiel and Larry Page—have fueled concerns from Governor Gavin Newsom regarding capital flight. While Newsom advocates for a national tax reform to address how the ultra-wealthy utilize stock portfolios to avoid income taxes, not all industry leaders oppose the state measure. Nvidia co-founder Jensen Huang, who would face an $8 billion tax bill under the proposal, recently stated he is perfectly fine with the mandate, noting that he accepts the tax obligations that come with his decision to reside in Silicon Valley.
