Sivers and SemiNex Launch $3.4 Million AI Photonics Initiative

A new $3.4 million partnership between Kista-based Sivers Semiconductors and Massachusetts developer SemiNex aims to solve the thermal and power constraints of AI data centers. The collaboration focuses on next-generation indium phosphide light sources designed to support the scaling requirements of co-packaged optics and high-channel-count optical networks.

As artificial intelligence infrastructure shifts optics from the faceplate directly into the processor package, the physical limitations of current laser components are hitting a ceiling. The program seeks to overcome these barriers by integrating high-power external laser sources and semiconductor optical amplifier gain stages. These components are designed to manage the heat and efficiency demands that dictate how far modern computing architectures can realistically expand.

Sivers Semiconductors CEO Vickram Vathulya emphasized that advanced light sources now carry the same strategic weight as compute and memory hardware. By combining Sivers’ photonics expertise with SemiNex’s proprietary indium phosphide processing, the companies intend to move beyond simply pushing existing hardware to its limits. SemiNex CEO Ronald Moore noted that the industry cannot achieve the necessary gains in power and wavelength density through incremental updates to current devices. The companies have scheduled initial customer sampling and early production phases for the second half of 2027.
