Workday has reappointed co-founder Aneel Bhusri as chief executive, replacing Carl Eschenbach as the company pivots its long-term strategy toward artificial intelligence. Workday Co-Founder Aneel Bhusri Returns as CEO for AI Push

Bhusri’s return marks a significant leadership shift for the enterprise software giant he co-founded in 2005. Having served as CEO or co-CEO for nearly a decade until early 2024, his reappointment signals a desire for founder-led stability during a period of rapid technological change. Bhusri characterized the current era as a "pivotal moment," suggesting that the impact of AI will surpass the industry-wide transition to software-as-a-service seen in previous decades.

The Strategic Shift to AI

The leadership change is explicitly tied to Workday's ambition to dominate the next generation of market leaders through AI integration. According to Bhusri, the technology represents a fundamental transformation of the business landscape. To lead this charge, Bhusri will receive an annual base salary of $1.25 million, complemented by a potential cash bonus of up to 200% and substantial equity awards.

Executive Transition Details

Eschenbach’s departure from the top job comes after a tenure that began with a board seat in 2018 and culminated in his solo CEO appointment earlier this year. As part of his exit, the company disclosed the following terms:
  • A lump sum severance payment of approximately $3.6 million.
    • The inclusion of standard separation benefits.
    • A transition into a new role as a strategic adviser to the CEO.
