The acquisition of Stivarga, which is indicated for metastatic colorectal cancer, gastrointestinal stromal tumors, and hepatocellular carcinoma, aligns with the Aachen-based company’s strategy of purchasing mature assets to drive profitability. Since 2017, Grünenthal has deployed approximately €2.6 billion in mergers and acquisitions, including the purchase of US-based Valinor Pharma and various global rights for treatments like Nebido and Nexium.

Grünenthal Acquires Oncology Drug Stivarga from Bayer for €375 Million
German pharmaceutical firm Grünenthal has reached an agreement to acquire the oncology treatment Stivarga from Bayer AG for up to €375 million. The deal, expected to close by early 2027, adds the oral multikinase inhibitor to the company’s growing portfolio of established medicines as it targets long-term commercial expansion.

CEO Gabriel Baertschi described the transaction as a strategic fit that provides immediate value to the business. Grünenthal projects that the drug could contribute up to €100 million to its consolidated EBITDA for 2027, provided the closing conditions are met. While the medicine currently holds approvals in more than 90 markets, the company faces a looming loss of exclusivity for the product in the European Union in 2029 and the United States in 2030.
