The new vehicle, Lightspeed India Partners V, is half the size of its 2022 predecessor. According to an investor letter, the firm intends to deploy the capital over a two-and-a-half-year period, prioritizing individual deal quality over larger fund volume. This shift aligns the India-specific fundraising cycle with Lightspeed’s global operations for the first time.

Lightspeed Targets $250 Million for New India AI-Focused Fund
Silicon Valley venture firm Lightspeed is sharpening its India strategy with a $250 million early-stage fund, betting that artificial intelligence will trigger the next major growth cycle. The move signals a thematic pivot for the firm, which has historically maintained a broad investment scope across the region's diverse startup ecosystem.

While India has trailed the U.S. and China in frontier AI model development, the firm views the country’s vast pool of software talent as a prime engine for the application layer. Lightspeed has already backed Sarvam AI, a developer currently working on sovereign AI models for the Indian government. This regional focus complements the firm's global AI portfolio, which includes major stakes in Anthropic, xAI, and Databricks. Despite the new thematic focus, the same management team responsible for the firm's previous four India funds will oversee this latest deployment.
