Before entering politics, the senator practiced as an OB-GYN, during which time he filed lawsuits against more than 700 patients. Records indicate these legal actions resulted in at least 81 arrests for outstanding medical debts, with some individuals detained for owing as little as $114.

Kansas Senate Ad Targets Roger Marshall Over Past Medical Debt Arrests
“Please do not handcuff me in front of my two-year-old daughter,” Meischa Zimmerman pleads in a new campaign ad. Eight months pregnant at the time, Zimmerman recounts being arrested in 2011 after failing to make a $50 medical payment to her obstetrician, current Republican Senator Roger Marshall.
Zimmerman, who owed $3,596 for a C-section, described the impossible choice between paying for electricity or meeting the doctor's demands. Her debt eventually doubled due to 18% interest charges levied by the firm representing Marshall. Political observers have labeled the ad a searing indictment of the incumbent’s character, with some analysts suggesting the stark narrative could fundamentally alter voter perception of the Kansas Republican as the election approaches.
