The startup’s primary offering, the SmartMast, replaces the aging Automatic Identification System (AIS) standard. While current industry tools rely on basic location pings, Quartermaster’s hardware integrates cameras and radios directly onto ship masts to capture real-time, high-fidelity data. Founder and CEO Neil Sobin notes that each unit records tens of gigabytes daily, providing clients with unprecedented visibility into shipping lane congestion, collision avoidance, and search-and-rescue operations.

Maritime Tech Startup Quartermaster Secures $140 Million Series B
Driven by global supply chain instability and a need for better ocean visibility, Arlington-based Quartermaster has raised $140 million in Series B funding. The round, led by Insight Partners and Overmatch Ventures, follows a $43 million Series A closed just months ago, signaling rapid investor confidence in the company’s maritime sensor technology.
Funding for the round includes $100 million in equity from Insight Partners, Overmatch Ventures, and First Round Capital, alongside a $40 million debt facility from Stifel. This capital injection is earmarked to accelerate the deployment of SmartMast systems, which are currently active on more than 650 vessels across 25 countries. As the company scales, it has doubled manufacturing capacity to meet demand from entire commercial fleets, moving beyond individual ship installations toward fleet-wide integration.
