The integration relies on WebMCP, a standard designed for agents operating within a user's browser. Previously, these tools were limited to inventory searches and cart management. Shopify has now introduced three specific functions—get_checkout, update_checkout, and complete_checkout—allowing agents to modify delivery details and submit orders without resorting to clumsy webpage scraping or screenshot analysis.

Shopify Embraces Browser AI Agents for Full Checkout Capabilities
While competitors like Amazon move to restrict automated purchasing, Shopify is opening its doors to browser-based AI agents. The e-commerce giant announced Monday that agents can now go beyond product discovery, utilizing new tools to navigate the checkout process and finalize transactions directly on merchant storefronts with buyer authorization.
Gil Greenberg, a staff product manager at Shopify, noted that these tools provide structured APIs rather than forcing agents to parse HTML built for human eyes. By leveraging the Universal Commerce Protocol, the system ensures that commerce facts and required disclosures remain accurate during the automated handoff. The feature is currently rolling out to all eligible merchants, with early support already established through partnerships with AI agents such as Muse and Instinct.
