Sophia Space and Redwire Partner to Build Orbital Data Centers
Sophia Space and Redwire Corporation have signed a memorandum of understanding to develop scalable computing infrastructure in orbit. By merging Sophia’s modular TILE computing architecture with Redwire’s systems engineering, the companies intend to shift from experimental orbital missions to the creation of persistent, high-performance data center networks.
Sophia Space CEO Rob DeMillo stated that the industry has moved beyond questioning the viability of orbital computing, shifting the focus toward rapid scaling. Redwire CTO Al Tadros noted that orbital data centers offer a way to expand computing capacity beyond terrestrial limitations. The two firms plan to pursue opportunities with U.S. government entities, including DARPA, the Air Force Research Laboratory, the Space Development Agency, and the National Reconnaissance Office, to refine these architectures for both commercial and defense applications.
