WhatsApp Expands Parental Oversight for Teen Accounts

The new suite of tools grants guardians granular control over how teenagers navigate the app. Parents can now determine who interacts with their child’s profile, limit exposure to specific channels, and receive automated notifications when their teen joins or leaves groups. The system also monitors group growth, alerting parents if a conversation reaches sizes of 30, 100, or 250 members. All adjustments require a parent-set PIN, preventing teens from unilaterally altering these restrictions.

Meta has also integrated specific safeguards for Meta AI. Guardians can toggle between standard 13+ access and a 'Limited Content' mode, which disables advanced features like message summaries and incognito chats. Despite these administrative controls, the company maintains that all personal communications remain protected by end-to-end encryption.

This rollout follows a period of intense scrutiny from lawmakers and regulators. Earlier this year, Meta settled a lawsuit with 29 U.S. states for $18 billion, a move that accelerated the company's push for safety-focused features. Recent additions to the platform's ecosystem include content filters modeled after movie ratings and automated alerts for parents when children search for sensitive topics related to self-harm.
