Temu Adds Geographical Indication Protection to Brand Registry

Local producers of goods with specific regional heritage gain a new tool today as Temu launches a dedicated geographical indications category within its Brand Registry Portal. The update allows rightsholders to flag potential infringements directly, aiming to curb unauthorized use of labels tied to specific cultural and economic origins.

Temu Adds Geographical Indication Protection to Brand Registry

The company developed this feature after consulting with over 100 trade associations and chambers of commerce across Europe, where participants identified bureaucratic hurdles as a primary obstacle to digital expansion. By integrating GI protections into the existing portal, Temu seeks to shield the reputation of goods whose value depends entirely on their geographical provenance.

This initiative complements the company's broader intellectual property framework, which relies on a mix of automated monitoring and human oversight. According to the 2026 Intellectual Property Protection Report, Temu’s proactive systems are currently active across 15,000 brands. The data shows that the platform removed 331 listings through proactive intervention for every single takedown triggered by a reactive user complaint. Beyond the new portal feature, the firm continues to manage its Brand Guardian Initiative, which currently coordinates directly with more than 3,000 global brands to ensure compliance and market authenticity.
