The company reported building 19,751 vehicles during the quarter, marking the first full period of sales for the R2 since its June debut. With a starting price point just under $60,000, the SUV is positioned as a volume driver. Rivian anticipates moving between 20,000 and 25,000 R2 units by year-end, a pace that would trail only the Tesla Model Y in terms of historical EV adoption. Expansion plans include future iterations priced near $45,000 to further broaden the consumer base.

Rivian Hits Sales Milestone as R2 SUV Drives Growth
Rivian delivered 19,248 electric vehicles in the third quarter, a 45% jump over the same period last year. The surge, fueled by the market entry of the R2 SUV, positions the automaker to potentially clear its long-standing production plateau and reach a record annual volume of up to 70,000 units.

To support this trajectory, production is currently concentrated at the company's Normal, Illinois facility, which recently underwent significant capacity upgrades. Looking ahead, a new manufacturing site near Atlanta, Georgia, is designed to eventually output 300,000 vehicles annually. While the R2 is central to Rivian’s strategy to exit years of heavy financial losses, the company is also diversifying its revenue streams. A recent partnership with Uber to develop robotaxi versions of the R2 has prompted a strategic shift, with the firm prioritizing autonomy investment over its original 2027 profitability timeline. Full third-quarter financial results are scheduled for release on October 29.
