Traditional light bars on maintenance vehicles often fail to alert motorists until they are dangerously close to a work zone. The new H.E.L.P. (Hazard Enhanced Location Protocol) system bridges this safety gap by automatically transmitting digital warnings to navigation apps and in-vehicle displays the moment a crew activates their lights. This gives approaching motorists critical seconds to slow down or change lanes.
This expansion is a collaboration with Sustainability Partners, which provides the infrastructure funding, and Emergency Safety Solutions, the developer of the alert network. According to HDOT Director Ed Sniffen, the goal is to provide consistent protection for crews working on both busy O'ahu corridors and remote rural roads. The technology requires no manual input from operators, ensuring it functions seamlessly during routine tasks.
