Argenx Stock Slides as Sjogren’s Disease Trial Fails

Shares of Argenx plummeted 18% in Thursday morning trading, erasing all year-to-date gains after the company abruptly halted a late-stage trial for its Vyvgart drug. The decision followed an independent committee finding that the treatment failed to show sufficient efficacy for patients suffering from the chronic autoimmune condition Sjogren's disease.

The Amsterdam-based biotech firm confirmed the discontinuation of the study targeting moderate-to-severe Sjogren's, a disorder characterized by debilitating fatigue, joint pain, and severe dryness. While the trial outcome marks a significant setback, the company noted that safety profiles remained consistent with previously identified data, reporting no new adverse signals during the process.

Analysts at Bernstein highlighted the inherent difficulty of patient selection in Sjogren's research, noting that the field has seen little innovation over the past two decades. Despite this failure, Argenx continues to rely on the commercial success of Vyvgart, which generated $4.2 billion in revenue last year through its established treatments for muscle weakness disorders. Looking ahead, the company is pivoting resources toward a celiac-disease treatment acquired in its recent $2.2 billion deal for Forte Biosciences, which recently demonstrated promising results in midstage testing.
