Apple’s new Siri tool automates restaurant bill splitting

The familiar social friction of dividing a dinner tab among friends is the target of Apple’s latest update, unveiled at WWDC 2026. By integrating receipt-scanning technology directly into the iPhone camera, the company aims to replace manual calculations with automated Apple Cash requests for individual items.

Apple’s new Siri tool automates restaurant bill splitting

Point your camera at a receipt and the updated Siri interface identifies individual items, allowing users to select their specific orders. Once assigned, the system generates separate payment requests through Apple Cash. This bypasses the need for third-party apps like SplitWise, which have historically struggled to gain mainstream traction. Apple VP of Software Sebastien Marineau-Mes framed the update as a way to simplify group payments by keeping the process within the ecosystem of native iMessage and wallet tools.

Beyond financial utility, the camera-based Siri integration also introduces a tool for real-time nutritional estimation, allowing diners to scan food for caloric or ingredient insights. By embedding these features into the default camera app, Apple is betting that convenience will drive adoption where standalone financial tools previously failed to stick.
