Apple Reimagines Siri as an On-Device AI Companion

Two years after initial promises stalled, Apple unveiled a comprehensive overhaul of its virtual assistant at WWDC 2026. The new Siri transitions from a simple voice-triggered tool into an intelligent companion capable of parsing on-screen context, drafting personalized communications, and integrating deeply with the company's hardware ecosystem.

Apple Reimagines Siri as an On-Device AI Companion

The reimagined assistant, dubbed Siri AI, moves beyond basic voice commands to function as a conversational chatbot designed to compete directly with platforms like ChatGPT and Gemini. By leveraging current world knowledge and local device data, the assistant can now analyze what is displayed on a user’s screen to provide relevant, grounded answers. For visual feedback, Siri will present information via text cards derived from web searches or personal correspondence.

Hardware integration remains central to the update, as the interface shifts from a glowing screen edge to a refined animation within the Dynamic Island. Beyond visual tweaks, the "Write with Siri" feature offers nuanced text generation, analyzing a user’s history to mirror their specific communication style with colleagues or friends. The system also gains a broader functional reach, allowing users to initiate complex tasks—such as drafting emails or brainstorming—by pulling data from calendars, contacts, and prior messages. Across macOS, Siri now powers Spotlight search, while watchOS users gain expanded capabilities to execute actions directly from their wrists. These features are scheduled to reach users in beta later this year.
