Zest turns verified credit card spending into a dining social network

Most restaurant discovery tools rely on subjective reviews or performative social media posts, but Zest is betting on cold, hard transaction data. The startup, which just secured $1.8 million in pre-seed funding, maps your actual dining habits by syncing with credit card statements to offer personalized, location-based recommendations.

By linking your account via Plaid, Zest filters out fast-food chains and creates a visual map of your genuine dining history. The app ignores social posturing, focusing instead on the frequency of your visits to neighborhood regulars and hidden gems. Co-founder Mario Gomez-Hall, formerly of the social app Saturn, argues that this verified spend approach surfaces more authentic findings than traditional review platforms. The system is already gaining traction, recording over 100,000 visits shortly after its public launch.

The platform supplements this transactional foundation by aggregating 80 million reviews from sources ranging from the Michelin guide to Reddit threads. This month, Zest is introducing freeform notes and a "Fresh Picks" feature, which functions as a personalized discovery feed for new local spots. While currently limited to dining, the founders intend to evolve the app into a broader exploration tool, eventually incorporating retail and other city services into its recommendation engine.
