Equal AI Secures $30 Million to Automate Call Screening in India

Navigating a daily deluge of spam, logistics, and unsolicited financial solicitations has become a persistent burden for Indian mobile users. Equal AI, a startup founded by Keshav Reddy, is tackling this friction by deploying an automated assistant capable of intercepting calls, querying callers, and providing users with immediate, actionable context.

Equal AI Secures $30 Million to Automate Call Screening in India

Since its launch last year, the Android-based application has scaled to over one million monthly active users. The platform allows individuals to delegate incoming calls to an AI that screens the intent, provides a summary, and offers quick-reply options—such as instructions for delivery drivers—which the system reads aloud to the caller. The startup recently closed a $30 million Series B funding round led by Prosus Ventures and Tomales Bay Capital, bringing its total capital raised to $42 million. This financing is structured across three tranches tied to specific performance milestones, a strategy that allows the company to reach varying valuations.

Beyond basic screening, the company is refining its models to handle India’s complex linguistic landscape, where users frequently blend multiple languages within a single conversation. By supporting over 10 languages and utilizing a proprietary orchestration layer, Equal AI aims to differentiate itself from competitors like Truecaller and native offerings from Apple and Google. While the current version focuses on unknown numbers, founder Keshav Reddy plans to expand into proactive outbound calling, appointment scheduling, and an upcoming iOS version. By building a standalone app rather than relying on third-party messaging platforms, the firm seeks to avoid the platform-dependency risks that have hindered other AI assistants in global markets.
