SpaceX to Acquire AI Startup Cursor for $60 Billion

Days after a historic public offering that sent its stock soaring, SpaceX has confirmed a $60 billion all-stock acquisition of the AI coding startup Cursor. The deal follows a turbulent restructuring of Elon Musk’s AI division, which has struggled with high-profile controversies and the departure of all original xAI co-founders.

SpaceX to Acquire AI Startup Cursor for $60 Billion

The acquisition is slated to close in the third quarter of this year, signaling an aggressive pivot for SpaceX as it attempts to justify an ambitious $26 trillion AI market projection shared with investors. Before the SpaceX takeover, Cursor had been navigating a competitive landscape, having previously raised over $3 billion and preparing for a $2 billion funding round that would have valued the firm at $50 billion. The startup, founded in 2022 as Anysphere, gained prominence as a leader in AI-powered coding, eventually securing interest from heavyweights like Andreessen Horowitz and Nvidia.

For SpaceX, the integration of Cursor is a critical effort to stabilize its AI operations. The company’s internal AI unit has faced significant instability, including the total turnover of xAI’s founding team and legal challenges stemming from the generation of non-consensual deepfakes. By acquiring Cursor, Musk is betting on a rapid technological infusion to deliver on the infrastructure and enterprise application promises made during the IPO process. With SpaceX shares climbing from $135 to over $200 since their debut, the company holds the capital to aggressively pursue this consolidation, effectively adding nearly $1 trillion in market value in less than a week.
