Senators Challenge Tesla’s Autonomy Safety Metrics

Senators Ed Markey and Richard Blumenthal are pushing the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to investigate Tesla’s Full Self-Driving safety data. The lawmakers argue that the company’s assertion that its vehicles are ten times safer than human drivers relies on flawed methodology designed to inflate performance statistics.

Senators Challenge Tesla’s Autonomy Safety Metrics

In a formal letter sent Tuesday to NHTSA Administrator Jonathan Morrison, the senators questioned the legitimacy of Tesla’s claim that its software reduces crash rates by 85%. They suggested that these figures lack rigorous justification and instead stem from skewed internal metrics. Beyond the specific challenge to Tesla, the senators are urging the agency to mandate stricter, more transparent data reporting for all companies developing autonomous vehicle technology.

Tesla currently faces an ongoing NHTSA probe, which intensified earlier this year following reports of multiple crashes, including one fatality, linked to its driver-assistance systems. While Tesla has not commented on the senators' demands, the agency confirmed it is reviewing the communication. This scrutiny arrives as major players like Waymo and various startups expand their fleets nationwide, intensifying the debate over how federal regulators should benchmark the safety of automated driving systems in real-world conditions.
