Lucid Motors axes 1,500 jobs as leadership turnover deepens

A fresh round of layoffs at Lucid Motors has claimed 1,500 jobs, marking the second major workforce reduction for the EV manufacturer in four months. The cuts, representing 18% of staff, coincide with the elimination of the second production shift at the company’s Casa Grande facility in Arizona.

The restructuring is the first major move by new CEO Silvio Napoli, who aims to streamline operations as the domestic electric vehicle market faces cooling demand. Alongside the workforce reduction, the company has abolished the chief operating officer role, resulting in the exit of Marc Winterhoff. Napoli stated the changes are intended to sharpen execution and improve long-term competitiveness, with the company projecting $158 million in annualized savings.

These personnel shifts arrive at a critical juncture for the Saudi-backed automaker. Lucid is preparing to launch the Cosmos SUV, a mass-market vehicle priced under $50,000, intended to anchor the company's path to profitability. Meanwhile, development continues on a luxury robotaxi service in partnership with Uber and Nuro. The company faces a turbulent internal landscape, having seen over a dozen senior executives depart in two years, including the abrupt resignation of former CEO Peter Rawlinson in February 2025. The current restructuring is expected to conclude by the third quarter, with $32 million earmarked for severance packages.
