Reflection AI secures $6.3 billion compute deal with SpaceX

A fresh entrant in the AI race, open-source startup Reflection AI, is securing massive compute power by tapping into SpaceX’s Colossus 2 data center. Starting July 2026, the company will pay $150 million monthly for access to Nvidia’s GB300 chips in a contract potentially worth $6.3 billion through 2029.

This agreement marks Reflection’s first major infrastructure commitment, positioning the 2024-founded startup to challenge closed-model giants like Anthropic and OpenAI. While smaller than SpaceX’s existing arrangements with Google and Anthropic, the deal underscores a strategic pivot for the Memphis-based facility. Originally constructed for internal xAI projects, the data center has evolved into a high-demand rental hub as SpaceX capitalizes on its vast Nvidia chip holdings. Both parties retain the right to terminate the contract with 90 days’ notice following an initial three-month window.

Reflection executives argue this partnership validates their open-weight strategy, specifically targeting enterprises wary of the risks associated with proprietary models. Following recent U.S. government scrutiny regarding restricted access to closed-source systems, the startup is positioning its infrastructure as a more transparent alternative. By securing this runway, the former Google DeepMind researchers behind Reflection aim to scale their models to compete directly with the industry's most guarded frontier technologies.
