Canadian Solar Enters Italy With Calabria Battery Storage Project

To address chronic power grid congestion in Italy’s south, Canadian Solar’s e-Storage division has secured a contract with Swiss firm Axpo. The initiative targets the Rizziconi power plant in Calabria, where a new battery installation will store excess solar capacity that currently overwhelms local network infrastructure during peak daylight hours.

The project involves an 8-megawatt, 40-megawatt-hour energy storage system designed to capture surplus renewable energy. By holding this power for release during high-demand periods, the system aims to reduce the region's reliance on energy imports from the north and mitigate the volatility of local electricity costs. Canadian Solar will utilize its proprietary battery cells and pack systems, a move the company claims provides greater supply chain oversight compared to third-party sourcing.

Construction at the Rizziconi combined-cycle gas plant is slated to begin late this year, with full grid integration and commercial operation anticipated by early 2028. While the financial terms of the agreement remain undisclosed, this contract represents Canadian Solar’s inaugural entry into the Italian market as it accelerates its European expansion strategy.
