Menlo Ventures Raises $3 Billion After Anthropic Bet Pays Off

A single $750 million gamble on Anthropic has redefined Menlo Ventures, fueling a record-breaking $3 billion fundraising round. The firm’s original stake in the AI developer is now valued at approximately $14 billion, cementing a massive return that has transformed the 50-year-old venture capital house’s trajectory.

Menlo Ventures Raises $3 Billion After Anthropic Bet Pays Off

When Menlo Ventures led Anthropic’s Series D round in 2024, the move was described as a bet-the-firm maneuver. To secure the capital during a cooling venture market, Menlo architected a $500 million special purpose vehicle, supplementing it with $250 million from its own coffers and internal contributors. This aggressive structure allowed the firm to gain a firm foothold in a company founded by former OpenAI researchers Dario and Daniela Amodei, long before the startup became a household name in the AI sector.

The strategy extended beyond equity stakes. Menlo launched Anthology, a dedicated $100 million startup fund in partnership with the model maker, which has since expanded to $250 million in deployed capital. This program has backed over 60 companies, including Graphite and Astrix Security, providing early access to Anthropic’s technology and leadership. By positioning itself at the center of the AI ecosystem, Menlo has successfully diversified its portfolio with high-growth names such as OpenRouter and Lovable, signaling a pivot toward early-stage AI dominance.
