Each transformer represents a $1.85 million capital investment aimed at reducing outage frequency and accelerating restoration times. Once operational, the equipment will provide the substation with increased backup capacity, allowing crews to shift electrical loads more effectively during periods of peak demand or emergency repairs. This redundancy extends beyond Lakewood, as the enhanced circuits can potentially support neighboring substations during localized grid failures.
Torrence Hinton, President of FirstEnergy Ohio, emphasized that these installations are central to the utility's commitment to long-term community resilience. While the first unit is expected to be energized later this year, a second identical transformer is scheduled for delivery the week of June 29, with full integration planned for early next year. During the transition, a mobile substation will maintain service to prevent interruptions.
