Half a Century of Concrete: How Double Jay Construction Endures

In an industry defined by volatile economic cycles, Englewood-based Double Jay Construction is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Since its 1976 inception as an excavation firm, the company has transformed into a regional infrastructure powerhouse while maintaining the tight-knit, multigenerational culture of the founding Blair family.

Half a Century of Concrete: How Double Jay Construction Endures

Randy Blair joined the firm in 1980, eventually acquiring ownership and steering the business from a small operation with a handful of employees into a major regional contractor. The company’s footprint spans southwest Ohio, with recent high-profile ventures including the $5.5 million Riverfront Park renovation in Miamisburg and various municipal improvements in Troy. While the scope of work has shifted from basic excavation to complex infrastructure, the leadership structure remains firmly rooted in the family, with Ron Blair serving as president and Nikki Blair Gates managing human resources.

Beyond technical capacity, the company’s longevity is often attributed to an unusually high level of staff retention. Key figures such as Field Superintendent Kelly Long, who joined as a teenager in the 1990s, have helped foster a culture that emphasizes institutional knowledge over rapid turnover. As a fourth generation begins to integrate into the workflow, the Blairs aim to balance their legacy with the demands of modern construction technology, ensuring the firm remains a fixture in Ohio’s commercial and municipal landscape for decades to come.
