The pivot toward AI has fundamentally altered the fundraising landscape. According to PitchBook data, venture deal value in climate tech climbed for four consecutive quarters, surpassing $14 billion in the first quarter of this year. This surge is largely fueled by infrastructure projects tied to the power-hungry AI sector, including grid technology and dispatchable energy solutions. For many startups, rebranding their mission to align with AI requirements has become the most effective way to cross the proverbial valley of death.
Yet, this singular focus creates friction. During a panel discussion, two energy founders argued that a faster AI buildout is preferable, even if it outpaces climate-responsible planning. Others, however, expressed frustration that the current mania overshadows segments of the industry that have been hitting targets without hype. Some founders noted that while corporate interest in climate remains, companies have become quieter about their commitments to avoid political scrutiny.
