Mexican Auto Output Slips as Domestic Demand Climbs

Mexico’s automotive industry hit a double-digit skid in September, with production and exports falling sharply even as local consumers continued to purchase new vehicles at a higher rate. Data released Wednesday by the national statistics agency Inegi reveals a cooling in manufacturing output against a resilient domestic market.

Mexican Auto Output Slips as Domestic Demand Climbs

Factories across the country produced 301,803 light vehicles last month, marking a 15% drop compared to the same period in 2025. This contraction extended to international trade, as exports tumbled 12% to 277,369 units. Despite the manufacturing slowdown, local appetite for new cars remained robust, with domestic sales rising 7.9% to 129,274 units.

The year-to-date performance reflects a broader period of stagnation for the sector. From January through September, total production reached 2.95 million units, a 2.4% decrease from the first three quarters of 2025. Exports followed a similar trajectory, sliding 1.5% to 2.53 million vehicles. Conversely, the domestic market has maintained momentum, recording a 5% increase in total sales to 1.14 million units over the same nine-month window.
