Modern Classrooms Project Secures $12 Million for Math Curriculum

With 72 percent of eighth graders scoring below proficiency in national math assessments, the Modern Classrooms Project is betting on cognitive science to reverse a decade-long decline. The nonprofit announced a $12 million funding round led by the Skeebo Foundation to develop a free, standards-aligned math curriculum for middle and high schools.

Modern Classrooms Project Secures $12 Million for Math Curriculum

The curriculum rollout begins in summer 2027 with middle school materials, followed by a high school launch in 2028. According to CEO and co-founder Kareem Farah, the project aims to bridge the gap between academic research and classroom reality by providing resources that emphasize explicit instruction, frequent skill checks, and cumulative practice. By making these materials free and adaptable, the organization intends to test whether evidence-based strategies can effectively scale math recovery across diverse school systems.

Teachers will have access to two primary implementation pathways. The first is a traditional, paper-based model suitable for whole-group instruction. The second offers a technology-integrated approach, allowing for self-paced mastery and freeing educators to provide targeted support to students in smaller groups. Both versions are designed to be fully modifiable. As the project progresses, a newly formed research advisory board of cognitive scientists and mathematicians will oversee product development to ensure alignment with proven learning outcomes.
