Google Slashes AI Subscription Pricing to $4.99

Google has dropped the monthly cost of its AI Plus subscription from $7.99 to $4.99, while simultaneously doubling storage capacity to 400 gigabytes. This aggressive move marks a shift in the U.S. market, signaling an intensifying price war among AI providers targeting individual users and students.

The updated tier includes access to video generation through Omni Flash, the Google Flow creative studio, and the research assistant NotebookLM. Vikas Kansal, the product lead for Gemini AI subscriptions, confirmed via X that the storage expansion will reach all subscribers within the coming days. By undercutting the competition, Google is applying a strategy previously tested in emerging markets like India to capture a broader domestic user base.

Chi-Hua Chien, co-founder of Goodwater Capital, views this as a definitive step toward the commoditization of AI infrastructure. He draws parallels to the web era, where infrastructure players eventually lost their premium pricing power as customers prioritized cost efficiency over specific backend providers. This trend poses a significant challenge for firms like OpenAI and Anthropic, both of which are navigating the path toward public offerings. While OpenAI has already experimented with localized, low-cost pricing models in international markets, Anthropic has yet to introduce a comparable budget tier, leaving it increasingly vulnerable to the downward pressure on margins.
