Canada Shifts Toward Nuclear Expansion to Double Grid Capacity

With the goal of doubling national electricity capacity by 2050, Canada has unveiled a strategy to construct 10 new large-scale nuclear reactors. Energy Minister Tim Hodgson confirmed the plan on Monday, aiming to break ground on at least two of these projects within the next eleven years to meet surging industrial power demands.

The initiative seeks to leverage Canada’s significant high-grade uranium reserves to support energy-intensive sectors, including artificial intelligence data centers, rare-earths mining, and advanced manufacturing. Federal authorities intend to expedite regulatory reviews and establish a specialized financing framework by early next year, targeting capital from pension and sovereign-wealth funds to secure the necessary investment.

While the federal government frames nuclear power as essential to achieving net-zero emissions, the strategy faces structural hurdles. Electricity generation remains under the exclusive jurisdiction of the provinces, limiting federal influence to a coordinating role. Energy Minister Hodgson emphasized that Ottawa is focused on bridging the gap between provincial authorities, private industry, and potential investors rather than seizing control of regional energy policy.

Controversy persists surrounding the political management of the project. Prime Minister Mark Carney was excluded from all planning to avoid conflicts of interest, given his previous role as chairman of Brookfield Asset Management, which holds a majority stake in Westinghouse Electric. Beyond large-scale plants, the government is also exploring the deployment of small modular reactors. These factory-assembled units are viewed as a viable solution for powering remote, diesel-reliant indigenous communities, with Saskatchewan officials already expressing interest in the technology.
