YouTube Overhauls Shorts Interface with Speed Controls and Visual Tweaks

YouTube is accelerating its short-form video strategy by allowing users to double playback speeds on Shorts, a move designed to condense the viewing experience. This update accompanies a broader visual refresh of the player, including the removal of the traditional dislike button in favor of curated interest-based feedback tools.

The platform is replacing the standard dislike button with "Not Interested" and "Don't recommend this channel" options, shifting the focus toward personalized content filtering rather than direct negative engagement. In another aesthetic pivot, the familiar thumbs-up icon is being swapped for a heart emoji, aligning the interface more closely with other social platforms. To reduce visual clutter, a new "Clear Screen" mode will hide all overlaying icons and text, providing an unobstructed view of the content.

While these changes arrive as YouTube attempts to refine its competitive edge against TikTok and Instagram Reels, the company has not provided a specific rollout schedule. Despite a late entry into the short-form market, YouTube Shorts currently commands significant traffic, reporting 200 billion daily views as of June 2025. Recent data indicates the format is increasingly migrating to living room television sets, with users consuming roughly 2 billion hours of short-form content on screens per month.
